Triumph of the Stolen Dogs
Media coverage of the four stolen dogs (two Welsh Corgis and two Akitas) had us sitting on our paws to prevent us from chewing off our nails with anticipation of good or bad news. Cardiff and I breathed a collective sigh of relief when we found out all dogs were returned safely and in time to compete.
We were so psyched to hear about Didi, an Akita, won First Place in the working class group and Best Puppy. Trace, also an Akita, won points towards a possible victory. Not to be outdone by the Akitas, Sunny and Peter, both Welsh Corgis, won best in working class for their respective sexes.
Best in Show
Congratulations to CH Propwash Reckon, an Australian Shepherd, for winning Best in Show and making your herding dog group proud!
Cardiff wants to give a special shout out to the Welsh Terrier top winners GCH CH Shaireab's Celyn I Kid You Not (Best of Breed) and GCH CH Malvado Dust Devil (Best of Opposite Sex).
Meet the Breeds
This year celebrated the 6th annual ‘AKC Meet the Breeds’, which gives the general public the opportunity to become more familiar with a variety of AKC recognized breeds.
Cardiff got to represent his Welsh lineage (via Washington) by manning the Welsh Terrier booth with his Welsh cousins. The Welsh Terrier Club of Southern California was on hand to educate the public about all things Welsh Terrier. Cardiff especially loved the chance to be seen with a toy version of himself, as people often confuse him for a stuffed animal.
Other canine representatives included Aggie (Agatha Christie, pictured) and Pickles.
Vendors Galore
I had the pleasure of meeting many product vendors and purchasing animal supplements to benefit the health of my veterinary patients.
Resvantage is a high quality Resveratrol supplements for pets (and people). This potent antioxidant can benefit pets afflicted with inflammatory disorders (arthritis, etc), immune mediated diseases (IMHA, allergic skin disease, etc), and cancer. Cardiff readily accepts the capsule in food on a daily basis as part of his ongoing IMHA treatment (see Using Integrative Veterinary Medicine to Treat Illness Affecting My Dog- Part 1 and Part 2).
Grizzly Pet Products make Grizzly Salmon Oil providing a potent punch of pet appropriate omega 3 fatty acids. Grizzly Pet Product representative Phil Buchner gave me a great great suggestion for pet owners all over the world. To preserve freshness and avoid “fishy face” (the unpleasant odor emitted by fish oil getting on your pet’s facial fur), put your liquid fish oil in the freezer. When you pump the fish oil out or squeeze the bottle to dispense an aliquot, the frigid oil will maintain a more congealed shape and is less likely to leave an unpleasant aroma on your pet.
Location! Location! Location!?
As I live in and practice primarily in Los Angeles, the location for the AKC Eukanuba National Championships in Long Beach was perfect for a day trip. The Long Beach Convention Center provided easy access for anyone interested in attending the show to cheer on or meet their favorite breed. Additionally, the vast space permitted dog show aficionados, canine competitors, product vendors, and media representatives to coexist peacefully without feeling crowded.
In Februrary 2011, I will be gearing up to make the cross country trek to New York City for the Westminster Kennel Club 135th Annual Dog Show. Make sure to sign up for email delivery of my blog posts, like me on Facebook, and follow me on Twitter (@PatrickMahaney) to stay up to date with my Westminster insights.
Thank you,
Patrick
